The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has refused to accept that rise in price of essential commodities is due to no rail connectivity in the State.
Criticising Food & Civil Supplies Minister Comingone Ymbon for making the statement, the union said such a remark is to cover up its failures and to mislead the people.
KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah termed it “irresponsible”.
He reiterated that the union will continue to oppose railway connectivity in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region unless a strong mechanism is in place to prevent unabated influx into the State.
The union has been demanding the implementation of the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation 1873 or the Inner Line Permit (ILP).
He reminded of the protests in 1989 and 2017 when the North East Frontier Railways (NEFR) began construction of railway lines from Tetelia to Byrnihat and said these were warnings to the government that the KSU will not hesitate to take stern action if the government tries to go ahead with the project.
