Pressure groups have written to the North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner over the status of a road project that is, they say, behind schedule.
The A’chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO), A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) and Garo Students’ Union (GSU), in the presence of Rimjen Ch Sangma, chairman of the Garoland State Movement Committee Pedaldoba unit, along with various Nokmas, Gaonburas and the public held a meeting on Saturday at the Achotchonggre Community Hall on the supposed negligence of the contractor responsible for building a road from Gokolgre to Achotchonggre.
The roadworks are long pending but were delayed by contractors. Even a re-tender in 2018-19 through the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has not sped up the work.
The road is meant, under the new contract, to be completed by December this year but Rimjen said, in a press release today, that none of the culverts or bridges are complete.
“Due to the incomplete road, people from the area, including office-goers, school students and those needing urgent medical attention, are facing immense hardships,” he said, adding that 40 villages depend on the road as it connects up to Bajengdoba and Pedaldoba.
