Three pressure groups and family members today observed the 3rd death anniversary of former militant Cheristerfield Thangkhiew.
Thangkhiew was shot dead by police in a pre-dawn raid on his home in Mawlai Kynton Massar on August 13, 2021. He was suspected of involvement in the IED blast that rocked Laitumkhrah a few days prior. That attack was claimed by the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council, which Thangkhiew used to lead.
Members of KSU, FKJGP and HNYF accompanied the family to pay floral tributes at his graveyard in Lawmali.
Cheristerfield’s younger brother, Granary Starfield Thangkhiew, said that the killing was an act of revenge by the police since they could not nab him when he was still a member of the outfit.
He also questioned the decision of the state government to promote the police personnel who had admitted before the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission HRC about the botched operation.
Granary also informed that the next hearing of the case is on August 19.
Later, members of the pressure groups put up black flags as a mark of protest against the killing of Thangkhiew in Motphran and Khyndailad.
