Shillong, Oct 29: Persistent and widespread opposition to the proposed public private partnership (PPP) model to run the new Tura Medical College has led the state government to consider alternative options.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said that the government is considering the best way to make the college operational.
He informed that the decision was taken by the government as there were concerns raised in various quarters.
The state government had proposed the PPP mode to run the Tura Medical College based on constraints with regards to non-availability of professionals. However, opposition parties, pressure groups and civil organisations feared that this would lead to higher costs for patients of Garo Hills and higher fees for local students, partly defeating the purpose of a public medical college.
“We had proposed the PPP mode as an option to start the medical college in Tura. However, as various organisations opposed the idea, we decided to take their views and suggestions. We shall further engage with stakeholders and the public and find out ways on how we can make the medical college operational,” Sangma said.
