The Meghalaya Power Workers’ Union (MPWU) has decided its members will wear black badges on July 9 in solidarity with those opposing the privatisation of the power sector in India.
The decision was made during a meeting held on June 20 to review preparations for the nationwide general strike.
The union appreciated the Meghalaya government’s notification prohibiting strikes in essential electricity services but expressed concerns about privatisation. The MPWU also hoped that the process of privatisation will never take place in Meghalaya since electricity is essential service.
The union also supports the 17-point charter of demands formulated by central trade unions and the MPWU demanded a halt to privatisation, increased transparency and protection of consumer rights.
