Pope Francis today appointed Fr Wilbert Marwein, the parish priest of the Divine Saviour Church in Nonbah as the Bishop of Nongstoiñ diocese.
This was revealed by the Archbishop of Shillong, Victor Lyngdoh.
The appointment was made public in Rome at noon, corresponding to 4:30pm IST.
Nongstoin has been without a bishop since October 2016.
Fr Wilbert was born on February 17, 1970 in Rangblang-Sohsyniong. He was ordained a priest on April 27, 2003 and joined the diocese of Nongstoin in 2006.
In 1988, he entered St Paul’s Seminary in Upper Shillong and from 1991 to 1992 and he studied at St Xavier’s Minor Seminary in Shillong, followed by a stint studying philosophy at Christ King College, Shillong, from 1994 to 1997.
After two years of pastoral experience in Pynursla, he studied theology at Oriens Theological College in Shillong. From 2007 to 2010 he was in Rome, where he obtained a licentiate in missiology at the Pontifical Urban University.
After his ordination, he served as assistant parish priest at Ummulong, from 2003 to 2005 and was the Procurator of Oriens Theological College from 2005 to 2007.
After his studies in Rome, from 2010 to 2015 he served as assistant parish priest in the diocese of Cosenza, Italy. From December 2015 to October 2019, he was the Vicar General of the diocese of Nongstoiñ and has been the parish priest of the Divine Saviour Church in Nonbah since December 2015.
