As the election campaign for the Lok Sabha elections from Shillong seat gets heated up, the Election Commission has issued two show-cause notices to the Voice of the People Party (VPP) based on two complaints.
One of the complaints was lodged by Auspicious L. Mawphlang, election agent of NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh.
In the complaint, Mawphlang accused the VPP of using social media to create fake news against the contesting candidate of the National People’s Party through two YouTube video links.
The Returning Officer of Shillong parliamentary constituency has directed the VPP to submit its reply on the matter on or before April 11.
Another show-cause notice was issued to the VPP based on the complaint lodged to the Election Commission by one Joannes J T L Lamare on April 9.
According to Lamare, on the evening of April 8 during the election campaign organised by the NPP at Jaiaw, Shillong, supporters of the VPP began to disrupt the campaign meeting.
Lamare also alleged that VPP supporters resorted to sloganeering and thus disrupted the meeting causing it to be cancelled before time.
The Returning Officer in his show-cause notice to the VPP reminded about the model code of conduct guidelines for political parties and candidates states that, ‘Political parties and candidates shall ensure that their supporters do not create obstructions in or break up meetings and processions organised by other parties’.
Further, the Returning Officer directed the VPP to submit a reply on the complaint lodged by Lamare on or before April 12 as to why action should not be taken against the party under relevant provisions of the model code of conduct.
