The East Khasi Hills district police has warned against the illegal use of sirens and tinted vehicles.
Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger in a statement today reiterated that the ban on indiscriminate use of these items was still in force.
He warned that violators will face strict legal action.
In 2012, the Supreme Court banned the use of tinted glass, restricting visions beyond permissible limit as fixed under the Motor Vehicles Act, in vehicles.
The Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, says that the glasses of windscreen and rear windows of vehicles should have a visual light transmission of 70 per cent and for side windows it should be at least 50 per cent.
However, violations continue on the streets even as no one is privy to the ‘yellow book’, a secret document of the security arrangement of the Ministry of Home Affairs made to VIPs.
According to the State government there are 103 VIPs in the different categories which include 2 under the Z+ category, 10 under the Z category, 19 Y category and 72 X category.
It may be mentioned that only VVIPs “Z” and “Z plus” category security are exempted from the directive of the Supreme Court, that too after a committee consisting of the Director General of Police and the Home Secretary of the state decides whom should be considered.
