A vehicle belonging to Phulbari MLA, SG Esmatur Mominin, was damaged while several people received minor injuries after a scuffle broke out between supporters of the MLA and those of the newly-elected MDC, Habibuz Zaman, late yesterday evening.
The incident took place near the village of Chibinang, West Garo Hills.
Mominin was not in the car at the time of the incident. FIRs were filed by both groups of supporters.
According to sources, the incident took place as the vehicle was returning from Chibinang market. When the car reached Bholarbitha, on the way to the house of the MLA, one of the passengers in the vehicle allegedly threw water from the window, which splashed on some people who had attended a felicitation meeting being held in honour of Zaman, who won a seat in this week’s Garo Hills Autonomous District Council election.
Zaman’s supporters did not take kindly to this and an argument, followed by a scuffle, broke out.
“There was a minor scuffle in which the car of the MLA was damaged but the vehicle was safely extracted,” Superintendent of Police MGR Kumar said. “Some people suffered minor injuries during the incident. Two FIRs have been filed and the case is being investigated.”
Zaman won the Shyamnagar seat on a Congress ticket, defeating Tarif I Sarkar of the National People’s Party. Sarkar is Mominin’s nephew.
