The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, chaired by Sanjay Kumar Jha, Member of Parliament, paid a courtesy visit to Raj Bhavan, Shillong today.
The delegation was accompanied by Sudha Murty, noted author, philanthropist and member of the committee.
Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar welcomed the delegation. He highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Meghalaya and underscored the importance of sustainable transport and tourism infrastructure in promoting the State’s unique traditions and natural beauty.
The committee discussed ongoing projects to improve road and rail links between Meghalaya and neighbouring states, stressing the need for all-weather connectivity to boost trade and tourism.
Murty commended the state’s efforts to integrate community-based eco-tourism models, and proposed collaboration with philanthropic organisations to support local artisans and conservation initiatives.
She praised the vibrancy of Meghalaya’s art forms and called for targeted skill-development programmes in rural communities to ensure that economic benefits of tourism reach every household.
