PA Sangma Medical College in financial crisis, state quota parents allege delay in admission

Shillong, Sep 7: Parents of MBBS students allotted state quota seats at P.A. Sangma International Medical College & Hospital (PIMC), USTM, have alleged they were unable to complete admission despite September 2 being the last date for first round as per DHS, Meghalaya.

According to a parent, after receiving state quota allotment for his son, they went to USTM for admission but were shown an official letter highlighting a severe financial crisis and that the institution is on the verge of collapse.

The parents were told that if the Government of Meghalaya and parents do not support and raise the quota admission fee, management may not be able to fulfill its obligation. Till date, the college has not received or allowed payment of admission fees and parents were asked to return home, the parent said, adding they felt “disappointed, embarrassed and cheated”.

To substantiate the claim, the parent attached a copy of a Memorandum of Appeal signed by parents/guardians of MBBS Batch 2026 (State Quota Seats) addressed to Commissioner & Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Joram Beda.

The memorandum states that parents visited PIMC campus for admission and witnessed ongoing development of super speciality hospitals, advanced clinical facilities, hostels and academic infrastructure, and interacted with Chancellor and senior officials.

“We… gained a deeper understanding of the enormous financial crisis the institution is passing through and urgent support required… We understand the institution has invested heavily… and has taken substantial bank loans… Due to present severe financial constraints, the institution has been unable to service bank instalments for several months and has also faced serious difficulty in disbursing staff salaries on time,” the memorandum says.

Parents said they support PIMC’s vision of providing quality medical education in Meghalaya and Northeast but are deeply concerned severe hardship may make it extremely difficult to sustain operations and complete required infrastructure.

“As parents, our primary concern is quality education, clinical training and the future of our children… We sincerely hope the present financial crisis does not adversely affect their education… nor result in any additional financial burden beyond existing fee commitments,” the appeal says, urging urgent government support.

Parents have urged the government to intervene and resolve the issue at earliest to secure state quota seats.
