Meghalaya has been conducting anti-tobacco rallies and signature campaigns in the run-up to WNTD. Across the state, more than 4.9 lakh students from more than 8,000 schools participated.
Awards are given to the best schools in a block, doing both activities, in four categories: primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary. Block award committees were made which included officials from the Education Department, parents, village headmen, etc. Block level winners were considered for district level awards by a district award committee and district winners competed for state level awards.
Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, Garod LSN Dykes, said, “The WNTD ’23 campaign is a great initiative to build a healthy generation. I am really happy that the Nodal Officer, BMCs, BRPs, CRCs, Principals and Teachers participated with full enthusiasm.”
In the district, 968 schools conducted rallies and 52,171 students collected 842,566 signatures.
In West Khasi Hills, the district winners were Madan Sohmylleng RCLP in the primary school category, Cling Care (Memorial) UPS in the upper primary category, Dapboklang Giri Memorial Sec School in the secondary category and FGEM Higher Secondary School in the higher secondary category.
In West Jaiñtia Hills, altogether 794 schools conducted rallies and 40,422 students collected 821,447 signatures.
The district winners for the campaign were Kharkhana Government LP School, Madankhliehriat Presbyterian Upper Primary School, Mowkaiaw, Tome Memorial Secondary School, Jowai and Laishnong Higher Secondary School.
