A five day training programme on nutrient management under organic production system organised by the by the Agronomy section, DSRE-ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam as part of the Tribal Sub Plan concluded yesterday.
With nutrient management being a crucial aspect in the North-east region due to its traditional farming practices, organic production system, and rich biodiversity there exists a huge gap between the demand, and supply of the different essential plant nutrients in the region.
Keeping this in mind the training programme was designed to create awareness among 51 farmers, and un-employed youths of Nongpoh, Umsaw, and Umpowin villages in Ri-Bhoi district.
The farmers were trained in the areas of scientific production of enriched compost, and vermi-compost, use of bio-fertilizer indifferent field crops and cropping systems, soil testing techniques, and in-situ crop residue management for improving the soil health, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability.
The programme also underscored the importance of integrating crop rotations, cover cropping, green manure, integrated farming systems, along with dairy, fishery and poultry management, besides the use of different organic amendments to replenish soil nutrients, and acidity naturally.
The farmers were also enlightened on the positive effects on organic integrity by adhering to organic standards and avoiding synthetic products.
The participants also received a supportive package that included seeds of pea, coriander, beans, carrot, tomato, cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli, along with neem oil and Trichoderma for insect-pest management.
