Union Home Minister Amit Shah today continued his tirade against Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and the NPP and said that the present government is looting the State.

Shah today addressed election rallies in Rangsakona and Dalu of West Garo Hills where he lambasted the two Sangma families (Conrad and Mukul) for working only for their own “personal development”.

Addressing a rally in Rangsakona, Shah said that Conrad Sangma and Mukul Sangma “never focused on the welfare of the people but instead are busy working for their own families and personal development”.

“For years, two families have ruled Meghalaya. Mukul Sangma ruled the State for several years, while Conrad Sangma’s family was also in power for many years. But nothing good has happened in this State. What did these two families do?” Shah asked.

“These two families indulged in corruption and filled their own coffers with poor people’s money. Time has come to free Meghalaya of these two families and bring the BJP to power. The BJP election manifesto has already announced that we would probe this corruption in Meghalaya,” he said.

Shah further accused Conrad and Mukul of giving benefits to their family members and acquaintances.

“Wherever the BJP formed the government, it ended corruption in government jobs. But when Mukul Sangma comes to power, he gives benefits to his family members. Similarly, when Conrad Sangma comes to power, he gives benefits to his family members and acquaintances,” he said.

Coming down heavily on Congress and NPP, Shah said that the previous governments looted the money meant for building houses for the poor.

“The central government had approved 2.5 lakh housing units but people did not get them,” Shah said, adding that Conrad Sangma stopped the flow of central funds in the State.

Citing the RBI report, the Union home minister said that Meghalaya is the State with the lowest growth rate in India due to the corruption of the Congress and NPP governments.

Shah said that the Narendra Modi government had provided Rs 24,000 crore for the supply of the water to all the households in Meghalaya, but the money was siphoned off by the State government.

“Corruption has also plagued MGNREGA in Meghalaya. The present Meghalaya government led by NPP has committed corruption by showing a deficit of Rs 1,800 crore in the budget,” Shah said.

He also said that under Conrad Sangma, MePDCL which is the electricity discom of the State became bankrupt due to corruption by the State government.

Stating that the BJP has promised that a committee led by a Supreme Court judge will investigate all the corruption cases in the State, Shah said, “We will send the people involved in looting public money to jail.”

Meanwhile, addressing an election rally in Dalu, Shah accused the NPP government of corruption in jobs.

“People in Assam, Tripura and Manipur are getting government jobs on merit. But in Meghalaya, there is no government job without corruption,” he said.

“We spent Rs 5,000 crore for the construction of the National Highway in North East, but no proper highway was made in Meghalaya,” Shah added.

The Union home minister also said that Conrad Sangma did not let people to avail all facilities of the central government.

“People in Assam are availing these facilities but the Meghalaya Chief Minister is not letting people here avail of the facilities,” Shah said.

Referring to the developmental works done in Assam by the BJP government, Shah assured that once the party is in power, Meghalaya will be developed on similar lines.

“Now in Assam, the poor do not have to pay from his pocket for his medical treatment. Under Ayushman Bharat Yojana, treatment up to Rs 5 lakh is done for free. The same facility will be available in Meghalaya once the BJP comes to power,” he said.
