The National People’s Party (NPP) has no plans to launch a coup within the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), even if it manages to outnumber its ally, the United Democratic Party (UDP), in numbers of MDCs.
This was stated today by Pyniaid Sing Syiem, an NPP MDC, secretary of the NPP’s parliamentary party in the council and KHADC Chairman. However, he left the door wide open to any MDC who wants to join the NPP, saying that the party is ready to welcome them all.
The governing bench of the KHADC consists of eight UDP MDCs, seven from the NPP, four independents, two from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party and one from the People’s Democratic Front.
Rumours have been doing the rounds lately that one of the independents, Grace Mary Kharpuri, was set to join the NPP, which would bring it up to par with the UDP in terms of MDCs. Kharpuri refuted these suggestions.
Syiem today said that the NPP will keep to its promise of supporting the executive committee that is led by the UDP’s Titosstarwell Chyne.
