Nongpoh, the district headquarter of Ri-Bhoi, has been awarded as the “Best Performing Nagar Panchayat” (emerging town).
Nongpoh was among the eight towns in the country that have been selected for this achievement. Others included Malihabad and Hariharpur in Uttar Pradesh, Athmallik in Odisha, Thedavur in Tamil Nadu, Sheohar in Bihar, Dineshpur in Uttarakhand and Lawngtlai in Mizoram.
In order to recognise the outstanding contribution of states, union territories and municipal boards, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has instituted annual awards for excellence in implementation of PMAY Urban in 2019.
The awards have been broadly classified into three levels and various categories.
The award was presented by Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs State Hardeep Singh Puri recently.
Another award for “Best House Construction” has been also awarded to Lucybon Syngkli of Nongkhrah village under Nongpoh town. The award was presented by Durga Shankar Mishra, Secretary, Housing and Urban Affairs.
The award was given to Syngkli under PMAY (Urban) which is the central scheme to provide housing to the poor families.
Chairman of Nongpoh Town Committee Cleophas B. Syiem and secretary Rayonald Kharkani today lauded Syngkli for proper implementation of the housing scheme.
According to them, Syngkli’s achievement would serve as a good example to other beneficiaries to properly utilise government schemes for their own benefit and also benefit of the community.
