Social activist Nilberth Ch Marak has filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India today, informing that the illegal export of sugar to Bangladesh is continuing without any action by the district administration and police of North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills.
Nilberth had filed a complaint with the Election Commission regarding the Superintendent of Police of North Garo Hills, Bruno A Sangma, over the latter’s familial relationship with Tura MP incumbent and candidate for Friday’s general election, Agatha K Sangma.
The EC then replaced Bruno with Abraham T Sangma.
Nilberth had also accused Bruno and the Customs Officer of Gasuapara, South Garo Hills, for indulging in illegal transportation of goods.
In his previous complaint, he stated that thousands of trucks and other vehicles were illegally transporting/exporting sugar and onions to Bangladesh without a valid licence or proper permission.
Nilberth alleges that the district administration and SPs of North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and West Garo Hills are allowing the free movement of illegal sugar and allowing overloading of trucks carrying sugar, onions, etc, to move freely to Bangladesh without checking.
However, even after Bruno’s replacement by Abraham, the illegal export has continued, Nilberth said, as evidenced by the spectacular bridge collapse yesterday at Joshipara, South Garo Hills, when two overloaded Assam-registered lorries transporting sacks of sugar caused the bridge to collapse.
Nilberth alleged that the road, which falls under National Highway 62, is merely a highway on paper. Though the tonnage on the bridge was restricted to 9 tonnes, the trucks carried loads over more than 20 tonnes.
Nilberth requested the Election Commission to take the matter seriously with the concerned authority and take strong and appropriate action against the respective district administration, SPs of North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, and Custom Officers of Gasuapara for violating the Model Code of Conduct and indulging in illegal export of sugar.
