In a bid to ensure that the New Shillong Township (NST) does not suffer from the same road bottlenecks that the state capital has to bear, the state government is looking to construct several approach roads from the NST to the Shillong Bypass, Shillong-Jowai road, etc.
The Public Works Department (Roads) held a meeting with other line departments here today to review how the projects can be executed.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the PWD (Roads) portfolio, said that the government plans that some stretches of road in the NST will be of four lanes. Meghalaya will reach out to the central government to sanction these projects.
However, Tynsong ruled out the possibility, at least at present, of four-lane projects for the congested old Shillong, which was never designed with the 21st century in mind.
