The new under-construction Dwar Ksuid bridge on the Shillong Bypass in Ri-Bhoi will be ready by the end of May, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project director Anand Singh Chauhan said today.
The bridge provides an important role in connecting parts of Meghalaya and the wider North East with the rest of India. However, big cracks appeared in the structure in 2020, pointed out by a concerned citizen, Kronding Nongbsap, in October of that year.
As a temporary measure, a Bailey bridge was used but this has proved to be inadequate, especially when there is large amounts of traffic and heavy vehicles.
Asked about the new bridge’s progress, Chauhan said that within 40 to 45 days the bridge will be complete and it should be open to traffic by the end of May.
