NESFAS in collaboration with The Locavore is hosting an event “Celebration of Millet- an Indigenous Peoples’ heritage of Meghalaya” to commemorate the comeback of the traditional crop of the people of the State.
The event on March 16 will showcase the potential of millet through innovative recipes co-developed by the communities and Chef Thomas Zacharias, with the support of local chefs from Shillong.
According to NESFAS the event will be an opportunity to understand the challenges and the solutions to the revitalization of millets, along with conversation with key opinion leaders over a hearty community meal that places millets at the centre of the focus.
Stating that over a period of ten years NESFAS has carried out various campaigns to revive, defend and promote the indigenous peoples’ food systems with special focus on millet, the society said the event aims to create tangible output through the repository of recipes, as well as a larger plan to shape the millet landscape in Meghalaya.
It may be mentioned that the United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 had also declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). Millet has also been recognised as a superfood that can combat nutritional deficiencies and it also one of the most resilient crops.
The Locavore is currently running the Millet Revival Project across India in association with Rainmatter Foundation which aims to facilitate the gradual incorporation of millets into our diets, as well as create a space for meaningful conversation and engagement so that we can tap into the resilience of millets while also rediscovering its taste.
