Shillong, Sep 7: A delegation of the North East Sports Association (NESA) led by its Secretary General John F. Kharshiing met NITI Aayog Member Dr. Joram Aniya in New Delhi on Monday to discuss development of sports and youth affairs in the region.
During the hour-long meeting, the delegation shared state-wise inputs on sports hostels, district indoor stadiums, coaching, talent identification, mandatory tournaments, sports leagues and strengthening of the sports ecosystem.
It sought support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and MDoNER for successful hosting of the 4th North East Games in Arunachal Pradesh, calling the Games a key platform for talent identification and athlete development.
NESA welcomed an enhanced national sports budget in view of Commonwealth Games 2030 and India’s bid for Olympics 2036. The meeting also discussed the National Sports Governance Act, 2025 and its thrust on regional competitions.
The member appreciated the sporting potential of Northeast and said she proposes to visit Northeastern states to assess ground challenges and make recommendations for upliftment of youth and sports.
The delegation included V. Lalzawmliana, Secretary General, Mizoram Olympic Association; N. Khatsu, Joint Secretary, Nagaland Olympic Association; Bamang Tago, Secretary General, Arunachal Olympic Association and NESA coordinator; and Tai Hipik, Treasurer, Arunachal Olympic Association.
