A Hindi professor was attacked allegedly by a group of men led by a student leader at the campus of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) with a scissor, police said today.
The incident took place on Thursday at around 4: 45 pm when Professor Alok Singh was attacked by President of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) Sandy Sohtun and five others.
According to the FIR, the professor stated that the student leader and five accomplices forcibly entered his office in the Hindi Department and locked the door behind them. He alleged that they then physically assaulted him and threatened to kill him while one of them held a scissor in hand.
The teacher has urged police to take swift legal action against and to ensure his safety on the campus.
Meanwhile, faculty members staged a protest on Friday condemning the assault as NEHU announced to constitute an inquiry committee into the incident.
“On behalf of the Vice Chancellor in-charge Prof SM Sungoh and the administration, the university strongly condemns any act of violence in the campus,” NEHU PRO Dr Davidson Pyngrope said in a statement.
He said while the police are investigating the university will soon form an inquiry committee that will look into the matter.
Pyngrope also urged the university fraternity including students to maintain decorum and assured that the safety and security within the campus is of utmost importance for the administration.
The State government on the other hand has made arrangements to ensure the safety and security within NEHU.
Home Minister Prestone Tynsong said he has instructed the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) and law enforcers to ensure safety and security of the students, faculty members and others at NEHU. “I urge everyone concerned in NEHU campus not to worry that the government has strengthened the security and will ensure everyone is safe and sound,” he said.
Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma also condemned the assault and called it unfortunate. He added that law will take its own course. “Such a shame such instances are happening at such a premier institution. I have been in touch with the SP and Police are taking necessary steps to provide a sense of safety and security,” he said.
