Shillong, Nov 20: The student community of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) held a public prayer for their fellow students, Darityngen Pohdukhei and Stephanie Shadap, who were critically injured after being hit by a speeding car on campus here on Monday evening.
The accident has sparked outrage and concern among students and authorities, with the accused, Permen M Sangma, a security guard, arrested. The company he worked for, Rangers Security and Services Organisation (RSSO), terminated his employment following the incident.
Prof Lakhon Kma emphasised the need to revisit security arrangements in NEHU, suggesting the university blacklist the agency responsible.
Kma criticised the security agency for allowing a drunk individual to work at NEIGRIHMS; RSSO has a contract to provide security services at both NEIGRIHMS and NEHU.
Kma also questioned the arrangement made with the security agency that allows its personnel to reside on the NEHU campus and he demanded the camp be shut down.
The faculty member also proposed installing speed breakers on the approach roads and gates at NEHU and to open the new Gate 1 within a week.
“We will not wait for anyone… We will do what is needed to ensure our security and safety is maintained,” he said, urging collective action to prevent future incidents.
