Members of the academic council (AC) of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have demanded for a special emergency meeting to discuss the implementation of the National Education Policy at the under-graduate (UG) level from this year.
According to the AC, the decision was inappropriate and carried out without any approval and as such, NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, who is also the chairman of the AC, should immediately convene a meeting to protect the sanctity of the statutory body.
Member of the AC and NEHUTA president, Prof Lakhon Kma said the Vice Chancellor has violated the established norms and procedures of the NEHU Act, statutes and ordinances by deciding to implement the NEP at the UG level in all affiliated colleges without the approval of the AC, as per Regulation RA-5, Clause 13, under Clause (1) (a) and (2) of Statute 42.
Kma said the AC members are not demanding for a roll back in implementation of the NEP, but the VC has to rectify the procedural flaws.
More than 100 members of the AC from Shillong and Tura campuses of the university have signed the requisition of the special/emergency meeting which is much higher than the requirement of one-third of the total members of the council as per Regulation RA-5, Clause 13, under Clause (1) (a) and (2) of Statute 42, Kma said.
