Shillong, May 2: To bolster disaster preparedness among students and the local community, a series of familiarisation exercises called ‘FAMEX’ was conducted in six education institutions in West Garo Hills district.
The initiative is part of a nationwide effort by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to raise awareness and response capacity during emergencies.
Held in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the exercise which began on April 27 concluded today.
The educational institutions covered include Dalu Higher Secondary School (Dalu), St. Luke Higher Secondary School (Tura), Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (Tikrikila), ICFAI University (Tura), Selsella Higher Secondary School (Selsella), and Don Bosco College (Tura).
NDRF provided hands-on demonstrations covering critical skills such as rescue techniques, CPR, first aid, and emergency evacuation protocols. These sessions were interactive, allowing participants to engage directly with the information presented.
Following the training sessions, joint teams from the NDRF and DDMA conducted field visits to evaluate disaster risks in the district. They identified high-risk zones, especially in flood-prone and earthquake-prone areas, to enhance preparedness measures.
