Residents of Nartiang have condemned the petrol bomb attack by unknown miscreants at the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar in Nongmensong.
Around 70 residents comprising traditional heads, church leaders among others gathered at the Shillong Press Club to express anguish over the incident.
“We are saddened that a petrol bomb was hurled at the residence of our political representative. Such incidents have brought in a sense of fear and insecurity amongst the people of the state,” H. Khyriem said.
He said the Deputy Chief Minister has made immense contributions to the state and Nartiang, the constituency he represents. He urged the government to arrest the culprits and book them as per law.
Rangbah Shnong of Sohphoh, Mutshwa Thabah said that such acts are not only a threat to the representative but to the state as a whole. “As residents of Nartiang, we will not accept such activities, and we are hopeful that the law will take its course,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has also condemned the attack.
JNC publicity secretary, Mebanteilang Sukhlain in a statement said such cruel attack threatens lives and peace and that shows the deterioration of empathy. “We all have the right to agree or disagree with the government. But to attack somebody’s home is condemnable,” he added.
Sukhlain said organisations have had a brush with the authorities on issues such as the demand for relocation of the residents of Them Ïewmawlong and removal of the BSF camp from Sonapyrdi. “To take the law into your own hands by disturbing peace is not acceptable,” he said.
He also urged the public to be calm, and the government not to antagonise the people but to work towards the welfare of the state.
