The Nokrek Area Development Committee has met with Tura MP Saleng Sangma and discussed concerns about bad road conditions in villages located in the foothills of the Nokrek national park in South Garo Hills.
The organisation said the road from Durabanda via Awegre, Anchigre, Pasimgre, Rongchangre, Dana Adugre and Mekalpagre has been neglected for years by the government and villagers are facing problems in meeting daily needs and especially during emergencies.
Due to the pathetic conditions of the road, farmers are unable to sell their produce during the monsoons even as they have to sell them at very low prices only at the Tura market, the organisation said.
Not just the farmer, the organisation added that students and patients are having a harrowing time commuting through the road while villagers have to walk about 35 km to Tura on foot to meet their daily needs.
The committee also called for construction of bridges on rivers and to promote the Bandari Falls as a tourist attraction to boost the standard of living of the villagers.
