Leader of the opposition and senior Congress leader, Dr Mukul Sangma, today refused to comment on why he was absent from the party function yesterday where former members Robert G Lyngdoh and Pynshngain N Syiem, among others, were welcomed back into the Congress fold.
The event was attended by other party leaders, including Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala. It was rumoured that Dr Sangma’s absence, as well as that of almost all other Congress MLAs from Garo Hills, was due to infighting.
Today Dr Sangma said, “It was an internal party matter. These I usually do not share with friends from media.”
When asked if the Congress will fight the 2023 state elections unitedly, the ex-Chief Minister said cryptically, “That’s a million-dollar question.”
Dr Sangma also said that his recent statement over the lack of unity among the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya was a general statement and not confined only to the Congress.
“Did I say it is happening in Congress party alone? I made a general statement based on my observation through my long innings in my public life,” he stated.
