In light of Byrnihat being ranked among the most polluted places in the world according to the IQAir 2024 World Air Quality Report, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) today convened industrial stakeholders from across the state for a consultative meeting to address and reduce air pollution.
The meeting was attended by MSPCB Member Secretary GH Chyrmang, Senior Scientist S Swer, Senior Environmental Engineer D Syiemlieh; and Environmental Engineers S Syiem, JF Lamurong and MS Tiewsoh. Representatives from various industries across Meghalaya, especially those based in Byrnihat, were present, along with companies that manufacture pollution control equipment.
Speaking to the media, Chyrmang stated that the meeting was organised to bring together factory owners, environmental experts and pollution control equipment manufacturers in a collaborative effort to tackle air pollution in Byrnihat and also in Umiam, which also houses several industrial units.
The objective of the meeting was to serve as a platform for dialogue and coordination. Often, he said, factories express challenges in connecting with reliable pollution control equipment providers. The role of the MSPCB, therefore, is not only to enforce regulations and impose penalties on violators but also to facilitate support by linking industries with suitable technological solutions to reduce emissions.
Chyrmang added, “Our work goes beyond penalising non-compliance. We aim to support industrial growth in tandem with environmental responsibility. Clean air and economic development must go hand in hand.”
