Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) Working President John F Kharshiing handed over a copy of the Meghalaya Sports Policy, 2019 to Loreto Convent School.
A copy of the policy was handed over to the Principal of the school Sister Mable P. Rudum during the annual school sports day yesterday, as a gesture to promote awareness and integration of sports policy among educational institutions in the state.
In his address, Kharshiing informed the gathering about the Meghalaya Sports Policy, which was notified by the State government to create a structured and inclusive framework for sports development including appointment of qualified sports teachers. He noted that inspite of many challenges the policy has led to a number of significant achievements and initiatives like revival of the Meghalaya Games after 16 years.
He informed that with the amendments to the Meghalaya Service Rules will enable greater sports incentives for athletes who are government employees.
Under the third edition of the Talent Identification Drive (TID-3), the government is in the process of concluding testing for 10,000 children across the 12 districts, Kharshiing said, adding, that the top 200 ranked children in the second edition of the elite training is undergoing a year-long, fitness training and monitoring under the mentorship of Olympians.
He highlighted the State government’s efforts in ensuring the hosting of the 39th National Games 2027 in Meghalaya, making it the third state in the North East—after Manipur (1999) and Assam (2007)—to host the prestigious event. He emphasised that this monumental opportunity will transform the sports ecosystem of Meghalaya and inspire generations to come.
Kharshiing urged the school authorities to maintain and to share records of athletes’ timings and distances during sports events with MSOA, as data and benchmarks are vital for tracking talent and progress. He stressed that every performance counts and could be the beginning of an athlete’s journey to greatness.
He encouraged the students to push their limits, believe in themselves, and never give up. “Sports is more than medals,” he said, “it is about discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.”
