A 17-year-old girl who had gone missing from Tura a few days ago was rescued from Guwahati yesterday.
As per reports, the girl was rescued after being intercepted by Assam police within Noonmati PS limits after an alert was sounded by West Garo Hills district police across the entire region.
According to initial findings, the case seems to be one of elopement as the girl befriended a 20-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh through social media. The social media interactions led to the two getting close, after which the youth had apparently promised to marry the girl and asked her to come to Guwahati where he would pick her up.
The duo met at the Guwahati Railway Station in Assam.
After the girl went missing from Tura, a police complaint was filed following which a search for the girl began leading to her being intercepted and brought back to Tura yesterday. The youth was also with her when they were intercepted.
“The girl has been rescued and brought back to Tura where she will be reunited with her family. Prima facie it seems like a case of elopement but our investigation is on to see if there is more than meets the eye. We will also await a decision from the family members if they want to press further charges on the matter,” Superintendent of police, Vivekanand Singh said.
