HSPDP MLA Methodius Dkhar’s office in Shillong was set on fire by unknown miscreants reportedly for pledging support to the NPP-BJP coalition.
Meda Infrastructure Pvt Ltd is believed to be run by Dkhar in Laitumkhrah.
According to the employees, neighbours heard a tinkling of breaking glass and smoke at around 10 pm. The office then caught fire after which they called the police and the fire -brigade.
A FIR was filed at the Laitumkhrah Police station by the CEO of the company, George Syiem. He told the Highland Post that the loss was more in terms of damaged and burnt documents relating to the company’s work, which is mobile tower maintenance and construction.
The burnt premise is their headquarters where 26 people are employed. About 300 workers are engaged in the field.
Syiem said work will continue with minor hitches as most work is stored in their laptops and home offices.
In another incident, the residence of Alvin Sawkmie, an NPP candidate from Mawsynram who lost the election to UDP’s Ollan Singh Suin, was attacked by masked men in Cleve Colony around 8.30 pm.
Incidentally, Alvin Sawkmie is related to HSPDP MLA from Mawthadraishan Shakliar Warjri.
Senior NPP leader, Prestone Tynsong has condemned the attacks and said that the government will make all out effort to bring the culprits to book.
“It is unfortunate that such criminal activities are taking place just because one party or one individual decide to join a political party to form the government. It is against the Constitutional right of the people,” Tynsong said.
He also said that the Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) and Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) appeared to be political wings of some political parties.
“NGOs are not supposed to get involved in the political process directly. Indirectly you have every right to vote and do what you want, but you cannot come out openly and say don’t vote for this or that party,” he said.
