The election of Mehtab Chandee Sangma in the by-poll from Gambegre constituency has again brought the limelight on the family connection in the State political scene.
This is the second time that a husband-wife duo would be sitting together in the State Assembly.
Mehtab Chandee, a medical professional, is the wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
By clinching the victory in the by-election, Mehtab Chandee has replaced another husband-wife duo from Garo Hills.
It may be noted that in the 2018 elections, Dr Mukul Sangma and his wife Dikanchi Shira were elected to the Assembly along with their daughter Miani D. Shira.
However, Dikanchi lost the 2023 polls while her husband and daughter made a comeback.
Similarly, Mukul’s brother Zenith Sangma and Conrad’s brother James P K Sangma also lost the 2023 electoral battle.
Other politicians with family connections in the State include Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and his brother-in-law Wailadmiki Shylla who is the MLA of Jowai.
Dhar’s nephew Damanbait Lamare is an MLA from Umroi.
