Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat radio show today, celebrated India’s rich diversity of arts, crafts and traditional skill by highlighting the unique Eri Silk of Meghalaya, which has recently received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

The Prime Minister emphasised how each region of the country carries its own identity and legacy through local products. Among these, Eri Silk from Meghalaya stands out as a symbol of sustainability, tradition and craftsmanship.

“Eri Silk is not just a fabric; it is a heritage of Meghalaya, lovingly preserved and enriched over generations, especially by the Khasi community,” said the PM. He noted its distinct production process, which is entirely non-violent, earning it the name Ahimsa Silk, as the silkworms are not harmed in its extraction. He added, “Nowadays, the demand for such products is rising rapidly in the world, which do not involve violence and do not have any ill effect on nature, hence, Eri Silk of Meghalaya is a perfect product for the global market.”

The Prime Minister praised the growing global demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products and expressed confidence that Eri Silk is perfectly positioned to meet this demand. “This silk keeps you warm in winters and cool in summers, making it ideal for diverse climates and expanding its appeal in both national and international markets,” he remarked.

Modi lauded the women of Meghalaya who are leading the way by forming self-help groups to scale up production, preserve the craft and generate sustainable livelihoods. He congratulated the people of Meghalaya on this remarkable achievement and encouraged citizens across India to support such indigenous products.

Calling upon the nation to embrace Khadi, handlooms and handicrafts, the PM reiterated the spirit of ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’. “If customers buy only products made in India and traders sell only products made in India, the self-reliance movement of India will gain unstoppable momentum,” he asserted.

Just a few days ago, on June 24, Modi penned a letter of appreciation to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for a gift of a Ryndia shawl made from Eri Silk.
