The president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has written to the Governor of Manipur to seek an independent, impartial and time-bound inquiry into the death of a nursing student from Garo Hills at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal on Wednesday.
The deceased, a 21-year-old fourth semester BSc student, Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak, was found hanging in her hostel room. The case has sparked widespread suspicion in Meghalaya that the suicide may be linked to institutional negligence, psychological harassment, systemic failure, and potential foul play, a conglomeration of pressure groups said yesterday.
MPYC president Timjim K Momin today said that the death has “raised serious concerns” about the safety and well-being of students, especially tribal and minority students studying far from home and outside their home states. The MPYC also urged the Governor to “ensure the implementation of adequate protective and welfare measures for students from other states, particularly those from marginalised communities, studying in Manipur.”
