Women ultimate frisbee players from Meghalaya won the ‘Spirit of the Game Trophy’ (SoTG) at the Sakkath Ultimate Open 2023 held in Bangalore.
This is the first time that Frisbee players from Meghalaya took part in a tournament outside the State.
Sakkath is the biggest ever edition of Bengaluru’s flagship Ultimate Frisbee event till date. There were 44 teams – 32 in the Open division and 12 in the women’s division from different regions across the country.
SoTG is the essence of ultimate. It highlights the importance of maintaining a positive attitude even in the heat of competition. It places the responsibility of fair play solely on the athletes themselves by requiring each player to know the rules and make their own calls, without the help of a neutral official. Respectful communication between teammates and with other teams is also central to the concept of SoTG.
“We hope to have many more athletes coming up from the CMYC’s Meghalaya Ultimate project, who will be able to go and participate in similar events in the future. We are building the sport from the ground-up and are looking forward to eventually building a State team for Meghalaya”, said Nitya Skaria of India Ultimate, who manages operations for Meghalaya Ultimate.
Meghalaya Ultimate, in partnership with Chief Minister’s Youth Centre (CMYC) project and India Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of Ultimate frisbee in India, had seven players from Meghalaya take part in the event.
The tournament also marks the end of their two month training programme at the Playquity Academy in Auroville, Tamil Nadu.
The seven players of Meghalaya, as part of the Playquity Academy Team named Bright Future, won the Spirit of The Game Trophy, a remarkable feat in the context of the sport showcasing the team’s incredible sportsmanship during the tournament.
