The Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTUA) has endorsed a call by central trade unions and independent service federations for a general strike on Thursday to protest against “anti-working class policies” of the central government.
In a press release today MJCTUA President MN Bhattacharjee and General Secretary JL Das said that the unions’ demands include bringing a halt to inflation in the cost of essential commodities, direct cash transfers of Rs 7,500 per month to non-income tax paying families, expansion of the rural employment guarantee scheme to 200 days of labour per year with enhanced wages and coverage for urban areas, withdrawal of “anti-farmer laws and anti-worker labour codes”, the halt to the privatization of public sector undertakings, bringing more essential items under the public distribution system and keeping life-saving drugs free of GST.
