The Meghalaya government has activated its disaster response machinery in view of heavy rainfall, which caused flooding in several parts of Ri-Bhoi district and reported landslides in multiple locations across the state.
Disaster management teams are on high alert, with ground-level officers working to mitigate risks and ensure public safety, Disaster Minister Kyrmen Shylla informed.
He said officials are actively monitoring the situation, with field personnel on the ground to prevent casualties and minimise inconvenience to residents.
In Byrnihat, floodwaters breached residential areas, schools, and internal roads, paralyzing movement. St. Jude Higher Secondary School was forced to declare a holiday due to inundation.
Locals reported that such flooding has occurred in previous years, highlighting the area’s vulnerability during intense rainfall. Landslides in unidentified locations have disrupted traffic, sparking further concern.
The Disaster Management Authority is expected to conduct inspections and issue a comprehensive report. The government will review long-term flood and landslide mitigation strategies, especially in frequently affected zones.
