Two climbers from Meghalaya were awarded ‘Grade A’ in mountaineering course by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling.
The award is the highest given in the mountaineering institutes for climbers for their performance in the training, which was held from April 1 to 28, 2025.
Balawanhabor Rynjah of Sankardev College won the first position in the Sport Climbing Competition, which is part of height gaining training. Rynjah and 65 trainees from the Advance Mountaineering Course reached Camp I of Mt Kabru Dome.
Keliostar Pdai, a Constable of the 3rd MLP Battalion along with 71 trainees climbed Mt. Renok (16,500Ft) during the Basic Mountaineering Course.
Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) Present Malviancy Shabong in a press release has congratulated the climbers.
“The rigorous and transformative courses equipped trainees with essential skills in mountaineering, including physical training, Yoga, rock climbing, ice climbing, jumar climbing, trekking, ice craft, crevasse rescue, map reading, rope techniques and rappelling. This comprehensive training was designed to prepare participants for the challenges of high altitude,” she said.
