Shillong, Oct 10: Meghalaya’s flagship Megha-1 turmeric has gone global.
International Fund for Agricultural Development President Dr. Álvaro Lario today flagged off a commercial consignment of fresh Megha-1 turmeric to Singapore from the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company Prime Hub at Bhoirymbong, Ri-Bhoi.
The consignment is produced and exported directly by ERBOFPC to Singapore-based Veg Pro Pte Ltd under the state’s umbrella brand ‘Meghalaya Collectives’ – bypassing middlemen to give farmers higher margins.
The export is powered by Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project (Megha-LAMP), implemented by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) with IFAD support.
With USD 3.12 million co-financing and processing infrastructure for drying, grinding and hygienic packaging at the PRIME Hub, the farmer producer organisations now meet stringent global quality standards.
Officials said it marks a shift from subsistence to market-driven, export-oriented farming and proves community-owned collectives can compete globally.
