As part of their ‘Drugs Elimination Enforcement of Dream (DEED)’ mission, the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) West Khasi Hills District today held a rally to express concern on the growing menace of drugs in the region.
HYC president Roykupar Synrem said that holding meetings in the Secretariat or the State Central Library is not enough to fight the menace drugs.
Stating that it is high time for action in the field against drugs, he said that the government should establish a special court and a dedicated investigation team to expedite anti-drug efforts.
He also expressed concerns that the drug influx into the Khasi region might be a ploy by “external forces” to destroy the community, aiming to weaken the youth, making it easier for outsiders to dominate, given the weak laws currently in place.
Synrem also urged the government to implement five other measures that include setting up of rehabilitation, detoxification, and OST centres, no bail for arrested drug dealers, constitution of a special anti-drug police unit, and establishment of a Narcotics Control Bureau office in Shillong.
