Ri Bhoi district police arrested three drug peddlers, including two women, and seized 254.16 grams of heroin during an operation carried out yesterday.
The accused have been identified as Ekramul Hussain (30), Monjuwara Begum (32) and Nihar Begum (30), all from Assam. They were arrested in 15th Mile, Byrnihat.
“It is highly suspected that the drug peddlers were sourcing drugs from distributors based in neighbouring States and have accumulated lot of wealth by peddling drugs,” police said in a statement today.
Cash of Rs. 58,380 and four mobile phones were also recovered and seized from their possession.
While a case has been registered at Nongpoh police station under section 21(c)/27A/29 NDPS Act a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to be headed by Ri Bhoi Additional Superintendent of Police has been constituted to investigate the forward and backward linkages, financial transactions, and take steps for forfeiture of illegally acquired property (IAP), if any, as per procedure established by law, police said.
The SIT shall also prepare the proposal for preventive detention under the PITNDPS Act, 1988 of the alleged accused persons, it added.
