Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal today said that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is going ahead with implementation of smart meters although there was reluctance on the part of power consumers to install smart meters.
“Since it is on we will be going further. Smart meters also require a smart SIM card and connectivity. Some have already been installed. These are coming with a flagship programme and are initiated as and when it comes,” Mondal said.
In February 2021, the State government had introduced the smart meter project, which is designed to facilitate power supply to consumers efficiently. The project is sponsored by Asian Development Bank.
Informing that there is still a reluctance by power consumers to install smart meters, Mondal said, “Smart meters will stop all the confusion of overbilling.”
On complaints by some consumers about exorbitant rates of electricity bills, the minister said, “If everybody is having meters there is no question of bills exceeding but if there are cases also they should immediately inform the MeECL that there may be something wrong with the meter and get it replaced.”
