A woman was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Thursday outside a school in Manipur’s Imphal West district, officials said.
This came just a day after schools were re-opened across Manipur, that were shut for the past two months since the ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023.
The killing took place at Kwakeithel Mayai Koibi under Lamphel police station.
According to the officials, the woman was gunned down when she came to the Sishu Niketan School in Mayaikoibi to drop her child.
However, as per a statement issued by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) the woman has been identified as Donngaihching, a mentally ill person who lived in a shed near a church in Lamphel area, built by sympathisers.
“The false allegations on social media by Meitei propagandists that she was a suicide bomber is becoming flimsier every day and does not spare even the mentally challenged,” the forum said.
“We again urge the central government to relieve the incapable state government and impose President’s Rule immediately,” the ITLF said in a statement. (With PTI inputs)
