A 37-year-old person who was lynched allegedly by angry residents over theft at Umiam in Ri Bhoi district died as he succumbed to injuries sustained during the assault.
Bartan Marak, a resident of a resident of Garogaon, Rowta, Sub-division Udalguri, was accused of making attempts to break into the residence of one Moureen Kharnaior, a resident of MIDC. However, he was caught by a mob of angry residents who thrashed him.
Police said Marak died yesterday at the Shillong Civil Hospital.
A case has been registered on the incident and police said an enquiry will be instituted to find out the incident happened in self-defence or other motives.
