A Ri-Bhoi resident was killed after the two-wheeler he was riding was struck by a dumper truck at Ninth Mile, Baridua, Ri-Bhoi yesterday.
K Mukhim (46), a resident of Bara Killing, under Khanapara police station, was hit by the truck carrying stone chips near the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).
The Nagaland-registered truck was identified as belonging to Uranus Stone Products, owned by one Ankit Mittal. The driver reportedly fled the scene after the accident. Mukhim was rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
A large crowd gathered at the spot and some angry members of the public tried to set the dumper ablaze. However, the police managed to douse the flames. They also pacified the locals with help from the headman.
Both the truck and two-wheeler were taken to the police station as part of further investigations. A case has been registered and the hunt is on for the driver.
