Lula: A comeback reverberating beyond Brazil

The victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil’s presidential runoff represents far more than the return of a seasoned political leader. It is a striking reminder that, even in an age defined by political polarisation and the rise of far-right movements, centre-left politics remains capable of mobilising voters through broad coalitions, economic concerns and democratic participation.

Lula’s comeback was remarkable because it defied electoral momentum. In the 2022 election, he led Jair Bolsonaro after the first round but needed a second round to get over the required 50 percent mark. The result capped one of the most dramatic political returns in modern democratic history.

Four years later things were different. Lula was the incumbent, Jair’s son Flavio a young challenger. Lula lost the first round three weeks ago 47 percent to 45 percent. This was not enough in Brazil, where, if no candidate gets an outright majority, a second round of polling is held with just the top two candidates.

The key to Lula’s success lay in his ability to expand his coalition beyond the traditional left. Rather than running solely as the candidate of the Workers’ Party, he positioned himself as a defender of democracy, social inclusion and economic stability. His campaign focused on inflation, unemployment, poverty and food insecurity, issues that resonated with millions of Brazilians struggling after the pandemic. Just as importantly, Lula successfully mobilised voters who had abstained or supported smaller candidates in the first round, turning a deficit into a narrow but decisive victory.

For Latin America, Lula’s election signalled that the region had not become permanently aligned with the new wave of right-wing populism touted by Donald Trump in the USA. His victory strengthened a renewed “pink tide” of progressive governments that seek greater social spending, regional cooperation, and strategic autonomy in foreign policy. While ideological divisions remain sharp across the continent, Brazil’s choice demonstrated that voters continue to prioritize economic security and democratic governance over political extremism.

The implications for India are equally significant. Brazil and India are natural partners as large democracies and emerging economies. Under Lula, cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, climate policy and technology is likely to deepen. Both countries share a commitment to reforming global institutions and amplifying the voice of the Global South. Lula’s emphasis on multilateralism aligns well with India’s efforts to build a more balanced international order.

Within BRICS, Lula’s return reinforces continuity. Brazil remains a founding member committed to the grouping’s objective of increasing the influence of emerging economies in global affairs. His preference for a multipolar world and stronger South-South cooperation provides momentum for BRICS as a platform that can complement, rather than simply react to, Western-led institutions. This stands in contrast to Flavio, whose right-wing stance may have taken him closer to Trump’s America, though perhaps not enough to dislodge from the rest of the BRICS nations.

Perhaps the most important lesson, however, concerns the future of left-wing politics worldwide. Lula’s victory suggests that the left can still win in an era of far-right ascendancy but only when it broadens its appeal beyond ideological purity. Successful progressive movements must address everyday economic anxieties, defend democratic institutions and build alliances that reach beyond their traditional support base. Brazil’s election shows that the contest between left and right is far from settled. If anything, Lula’s triumph demonstrates that democratic politics remains capable of surprising those who believe history moves in only one direction.
