The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will field candidates in both the Tura and Shillong Lok Sabha seats in next year’s parliamentary elections.
“It’s with the support of the karyakartas (party workers) that the decision was made to contest both the parliamentary seats and we hope to get the people’s mandate so that we can bring in more development to the state,” party state president Ernest Mawrie said today.
The BJP last month held a meeting in Guwahati wherein all North East state presidents and those from the other states falling under Zone III – West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Uttarakhand – were present.
The meeting was chaired by saffron outfit’s national general secretary BL Santhosh. They discussed on how to strengthen the party and figure out the strategy for Lok Sabha elections.
Certain directions have been issued to each of the states, Mawrie informed. The party’s Lok Sabha election committee has been formed, with the convener, co-convener and district conveners identified.
Mawrie informed that the state party has also decided to strengthen its presence in both parliamentary seats.
A meeting will again be held on August 9, which will be chaired by BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra and joint coordinator of the North East states will come and hold a meeting with the president of all regional states along with the conveners. “In that meeting we will discuss further on the next course of action for the Lok Sabha elections,” Mawrie said.
He also added that since there are a few months still to go before the polls, it is expected that in two or three months the party leadership will give the green signal to find suitable candidates for the Tura and Shillong seats.
