Shillong, Aug 26: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah, Trade and Finance Executive Members Winston Tony Lyngdoh and Seiborlang Warbah respectively, today visited Majai to get a grasp on the issues affecting the area.
The KHADC delegation visited Majai after a complaint from a conglomeration of pressure groups of Sohra civil sub-division on the issue of trading by non-tribals, village names in non-local languages, land acquisition by non-tribals and ‘illegal’ markets.
The KHADC delegation held a meeting with the members of Hima Sohra, the heads of traditional institutions and members of pressure groups of the area.
Speaking to the media, Rynjah said that the council’s visit is not to check trading licences but to discuss issues specifically affecting the Majai area.
The CEM informed that the council will consider the measures to be taken especially to survey the land and houses which have been occupied and built by non-tribals and added that the pattas issued to such people will have to be revoked.
On the issue of illegal immigrants, Rynjah said that the Executive Committee had recently asked all the Himas under its jurisdiction to keep an eye on illegal settlers.
“It is most important to have a census of every household and maintain an account of those coming from outside to stay as tenants,” the CEM said.
