Shillong, Aug 26:The Meghalaya High Court today disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) banning or checking the use of plastic in the state.
A division bench of the High Court consisting of Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh stated that the writ petitioner, Phuyosa Yobin, was given an opportunity to peruse the report.
Yobin told the court today that he is fully satisfied with the action taken by the state, namely in spreading awareness among the public of the bad effects of plastic and taking measures to stop use of single-use plastic less than 120 microns.
The High Court also stated that it accepted the submissions of T Yangi, Additional Advocate General that similar effective action has been taken in other districts.
“We direct the state administration to continue its awareness programme and its action of stopping the procurement, manufacture, sale and use of plastic less than 120 microns,” the High Court stated.
